Memorial Service to mark the 51st anniversary of the MV Christena Disaster held on Sunday

That was the organizer of the 50thAnniversary Committee  of the MV Christena Disaster, Mrs. Thelma Parris-Mills.

A service to mark the 51st anniversary of the Christena Disaster was held on Sunday, August 1st, 2021 on Samuel Hunkin’s Drive in Charlestown at 7:30 a.m.

Mrs. Mills said for this year, the organizing committee decided on creating a small but comprehensive booklet in remembrance of those who perished.

On the afternoon of Saturday, August 1st 1970, a government-owned and operated ferry by the name of Christena was overloaded on her final run of the day from St. Kitts to Nevis.

The passenger capacity was 155, but 320 people were said to be on board.

When the boat was half a mile off Nags Head and entering the rougher seas that line up with the channel between the two islands, the boat took on water and sank.

Only 91 people survived, and the great majority of those were people that had to be rescued.
