HERBERT'S BEACH AFFAIR GOES INTERNATIONAL
August 06, 2004

Three (3) residents from the dual Dutch / French territory of St Maarten / St Martin, were guests of the Caribbean’s Powerhouse – VON Radio, during the climaxing days of Nevis’ annual summer CULTURAMA Festival, which was held from July 22nd to August 3rd, 2004.

Dominican born Collin Hypolite, along with Nevisian national Vinetta Hyacinth Smith and her daughter, Emilyn ‘Rosie’ D’Haiti, were winners of a Herbert’s Beach Promotion run by VON Radio. Their response to advertisements in The Daily Herald Newspaper to call VON Radio and say “I want to witness the Herbert’s Beach Affair International, from 12 to 12 until 12”, brought them their Travel and Accommodation prize trips to Nevis on Sunday 1st August.

For Mr Hypolite and Ms D’Haiti, this was their very first visit to Queen City, Nevis and they were eager to take in the Nevisian hospitality. “I always wanted to come and visit Nevis and your airport terminal is very beautiful” remarked Hypolite on his arrival at the Vance W. Amory International Airport. As for Ms D’Haiti, she said “I was always bombarded with information about Nevis by my mother and though I would try my luck in the contest. I love it here”.

Ms Smith, on the other hand, was born in Rawlins Village, Gingerland, but migrated to

St Kitts during her teenage years, and later to St Martin. “It was a refreshing experience for me as I have not been able to spend a decent amount of time in my homeland for several years. I reconnected with old friends and was able to make contact with two of my brothers and a sister who happened to be in Nevis on August Monday”, said a joyous Smith.

An excited Smith continued, “the highlight of the trip for my daughter and I, was our two nights at the prestigious Four Seasons Resort. When we completed our two nights of royal treatment at Four Seasons, we were hosted by Mrs Dassie Pemberton at Pemo’s Guest House at Camp’s Village for one night. We were completely at home with

Mrs Pemberton, who as it turned out, is an acquaintance of mine whom I met in Tortola years ago. This trip to Nevis was beyond our wildest dreams. We were very well taken care of during the entire visit, thanks to the Caribbean’s Powerhouse”.

Travel arrangements were courtesy of WINAIR, while Pemo’s Guest House in Camps Village and the Four Seasons Resort provided complimentary accommodation for the winners.

The winners attended the Miss Culture Queen Pageant on Sunday 1st August at the Cultural Complex; and of course, they witnessed first hand, the fun and family atmosphere at the Herbert’s Beach Affair International.

The Herbert’s Beach Affair was conceived by the late Alfred “Bro. Al” Herbert, the self-proclaimed inventor of the Sailing Raft, along with the Good Citizens Club. A Rafting Regatta was the main feature when the event started in 1997. The raft signifies the method used in fishing by the early villages in St James’ Parish – the Herberts’, Jones’ and Perkins among the names who used various types of rafts to ply their fishing.

The Rafting Regatta gave way to a Fishing Tournament in 2003 with major sponsorship from Carib Brewery – St Kitts-Nevis and Carib Beer; the East Caribbean Group of Companies (ECGC); Superfoods Supermarket and the RAM’S Group. Other entertainment has included Coconut Shell Boat Races, Tug-of-War, Lighting of a Traditional Coal Pit, the Greasy Pole and at least two live music bands.

The event has generated much overseas interest with participation of bands from the USA and neighbouring islands. The list includes BQE and Universal Expressions from the USA; Lashing Dogs and Lover Boys from Tortola; Small Axe, Dynamics, Grand Masters, Odisi and Collission. In addition, several Trinidadian Calypsonians such as The Pink Panther, Skatie, Sugar Aloes and Cyclpos have made appearances on what’s been dubbed “The Late Show”. Lots of local and traditional foods and drinks are available at the different booths set up for the occasion.

The Herbert’s Beach Affair takes place on August Monday (the first Monday in August) at Herbert’s Beach in St James’ Parish, Nevis from 12noon and has endorsement at the highest level from Prime Minister of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr. the Honourable Denzil Douglas, and Premier of Nevis, the Honourable Vance Amory. The Herbert’s Beach Affair International takes the spotlight after Emancipation Jouvert on August Monday in Nevis.
