BROADBAND INTERNET SOON TO BE AVAILABLE AT MOST PUBLIC INSTITUTIONS
April 20, 2005

A Broadband Internet service will soon be made available to public schools, health centres and libraries here in St. Kitts and Nevis and four other OECS countries.

The Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority (ECTEL), the intergovernmental agency that regulates telecommunications for five eastern Caribbean countries will launch the service at competitive rates.

A date has not yet been set for the service which will be financed with a US$1 million World Bank loan, to be supplemented by contributions in Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

This was revealed by Director of the St. Lucia-based Eastern Caribbean Telecommunications Authority, Eliud Williams.

In 2001, the agency oversaw the privatization of telephone service in the region.
