NINE FARMERS IN THE FEDERATION TO BENEFIT FROM RECENTLY LAUNCHED WATER MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES PROJECT

A project aimed at introducing improved water management techniques through the establishment of the on-farm demonstration plots was launched in the federation yesterday.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)/ CARICOM was CARIFORUM Government of Italy Food Security Project was formally launched by Minister with responsibility for Agriculture, Honourable Cedric Liburd.

Nine farmers, six on St. Kitts and three on Nevis, will benefit directly from the project that would be implemented during this year.

One major objective of the programme is to improve farmer productivity and quality of vegetable production on a year round basis.

The project will contribute EC$129, 000 towards the establishment of on-farm vegetable irrigated demonstration plots.

The money will be used to purchase all the required irrigation supplies including a drip irrigation system for each farm.

Farmers will also be provided with appropriate inputs for an on-farm operations which includes, vegetable varieties, fertilizers for optimum plant growth, pesticides and will introduce the use of plastic mulch in vegetable production.
