Over 30-thousand vehicles on the roads here in St. Kitts and Nevis
February 09, 2017

With over 30-thousand vehicles on the roads here in St. Kitts and Nevis, authorities say they are moving to deal with the increasing number of vehicles being driven.

According to statistics from the Traffic Department of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, there are approximately 21,500 vehicles currently on the road in St. Kitts, while here on Nevis the figure stands at 9-thousand.

In December 2016, 202 vehicles were sold by companies in St. Kitts during the Discounted VAT Day promotion, with some 60 sold here on Nevis. Some 139 new vehicles were registered here on Nevis in the month of January 2017.

Minister of Public Infrastructure, Hon. Ian ‘Patches’ Liburd, said some of the groundwork for a new traffic lighting system on St. Kitts have already been laid.

Head of the Traffic Department, Inspector Carl Caines, said the installation of traffic lights will help his department, and the flow of traffic in Basseterre.

However, Inspector Caines noted that a sensitization campaign will have to be implemented to ensure that the public understands the different signals and pedestrians can learn when it is safe to cross the roads.
