March 24, 2017

The National Agriculture, Health & Food Safety Advisory Committee, convened a meeting on Thursday March 23rd and arrived at an agreement on two recommendations, with reference to the importation of meat products into the Federation of St. Kitts & Nevis.

The committee which comprises of the following agencies: Ministry of Health, Ministry of Agriculture, Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau of Standards, Customs & Excise Department.

The two (2) recommendations are namely: (1) To impose a temporary ban on the importation of all animal and animal products from Brazil as we have lost confidence in that country’s certification process for the export of meat……and…

(2) To remove/withdraw from the shelves all corned beef imported from and originating in Brazil, for detention until we have received more information on the specific batch numbers and companies that are implicated in the packaging of rotten beef in that country.

It is understood that the preventative measures were recommended to protect the general population from potentially contaminated products.
