Following the upsurge of gun violence here in the Federation, Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris, issued a statement on Wednesday (April 26th) to speak to citizens and residents of St. Kitts and Nevis.

It states, “My fellow citizens and residents, it is with a heavy heart that I address you in the wake of two homicides that occurred in Cotton Ground, Nevis on Tuesday April 25th, eight days after a young woman was tragically cut down in her prime and another one injured by gunfire in that same community.

My Cabinet and I extend our deepest sympathy to the families and loved ones who are grieving during this difficult time”.

He also offered assurance to those grieving, that the Government throws their “energy into addressing the social ills that these tragic murders are symptomatic of.”

In order to win this battle, each and every one of us must fight for each other, so that our society can regain a safe footing, he said.

Fostering collaborative community relations, where after-school and other recreational activities, community policing efforts, job training and placement, were some of the ideas Dr. Harris gave in engaging an approach to captivate the attention of the people , mainly young men.

At the end of the statement, the Prime Minister stated, “it is time to stop the bloodshed.”
