SKN’s opposition walks out of parliament after MP was ejected
May 25, 2017

After a verbal exchange between Speaker of the National Assembly, the Hon. Michael Perkins and the Hon. Konris Maynard on Tuesday (May 23rd), the MP as a result, was thrown out of parliament, prompting a walkout by all opposition members.

Mr. Maynard claimed he was ordered to leave parliament for “standing and awaiting the Speaker’s indulgence to ask a question”.

His ejection came on the heels of a sparring bout between the Speaker and Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Denzil Douglas over comments Douglas made about an economic citizen of the federation, who is of Chinese descent.

During a presentation by Prime Minister, Dr. the Hon. Timothy Harris, Maynard attempted to raise a point of order, at which point the Speaker told him it would not be permitted. MP Maynard rose again to interject, and Speaker Perkins warned that, if he chose to rise again during the prime minister’s presentation, “I would have to act accordingly”.

The Speaker told the opposition MP that by being on his feet he was distracting the session, and asked him to take his seat.

It was when he stated to Speaker Perkins, he did not know why he was standing, the Speaker consequently said, he found the young MP to be “grossly disorderly” and ordered him to leave the House immediately for the rest of the day’s sitting.

After the ejection, the remaining opposition members walked out of parliament.
