CMO to Reveal Info on Bird Flu as it Releates to St. Kitts and Nevis

Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Patrick Martin, will meet with members of the media to report on the local response to the dreaded Avian Influenza.

This meeting will take place on Wednesday November 9, 2005, at the Conference Room, Ministry of Health, Government Road, Charlestown @ 3 pm. A similar session will take place at the Resource Center, Ministry of Health, Church Street, Basseterre in St. Kitts at 11 am.

The Federation’s Chief Medical Officer, attended a meeting of drew national healt authorities of Caricom Member States in Trinidad and Tobago on October 27th and 28th .

The Caribbean region’s response to the Bird Flu is being coordinated by the Caribbean Invasive Species Working Group (CISWG).

A press release issued by the Caricom Secretariat stated that the Working Group recommended that states under its umbrella immediately strengthen their surveillance and tackle issues of quarantine, legislation and diagnosis and emergency response systems to delay and rapidly respond to the threat.

The Working Group fine-tuned the project Caribbean Invasive Alien Species Information Systems (CIASIS) which has two components.

These are to provide timely information on the status of pests and support risk assessments, needed to facilitate trade and to establish an internet based network of diagnostic laboratories and specialists to be utilised in the fight, the release said.
