THE OECS MOVES TO ENSURE THE PROCUREMENT OF ESSENTIAL TEXTBOOKS.
January 06, 2006

The Organisation Of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) is moving to ensure the procurement of essential text books for students.

It was one of the conclusion of a Basseterre meeting held late last year.

Ministers of education requested of the OECS Education Reform Unit (OERU) to circulate terms of reference for a subcommittee to undertake the best option for the textbook initiative.

The Education Ministers also solicited the support of the United Nations for the OERU’s task in making a decision.

It is understood that there are plans of purchasing them in bulk and have a central distributing system as is done with the procurement of pharmaceutical drugs.

Students and parents have long complained of the unavailability of books and high cost.

If carried out, it is expected that this strategy should addressed that problem as bulk purchasing would should lower the price on a single text book.
