FIVE PERCENT TAX ON PHONE CALLS TO BE COLLECTED AS OF JANUARY 9TH 2006 SAYS MINISTER CARTY

The 5% tax affixed to all local calls will be collected from the volume of calls made from January 9th 2006 instead of January 1st as previously announced.

This is the word from Minister of State responsible for Telecommunication Honourable Nigel Carty.

The minister stated that the Inland Revenue Department were given the appropriate documents on Monday to carry out it’s mandate to start collected the 5% tax.

Earlier this month mobile telecommunications providers expressed concern as to how the tax would be collected.

Mobile services providers they stated that they were unclear as to what changes needed to be made and lamented about the lack of adequate discussions prior to the announcement in the 2006 budget address.

However In speaking with the Minister Carty today he reiterated his stance, that the onus is on the telecommunications providers to reconfigure their systems so that the tax could be collected.

One mobile service provider stated that even though it was announced on December 13th that still did not give them enough time to make the change over.

Another provider indicated that they expected to be meet with government officials to have discussions.

However the minister stated that he had not been formally or otherwise approached lately by any of the service providers with the concern and expects that the tax will be collected.
