ENERGY OFFICIALS FROM ST. KITTS AND NEVIS TO MEET IN JAMAICA NEXT FRIDAY
January 20, 2006

Energy officials from St. Kitts/Nevis and other member states Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), will now meet in Jamaica on 29 Jan., to discuss energy matters.

OECS Secretariat officials in Castries said the meeting, which was originally planned for St. Vincent and the Grenadines today, had to be postponed due to the unavailability of a number of delegates.

Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves had proposed the energy meeting, in his capacity as chairman of the OECS, and as the sub-regional grouping’s spokesman on energy matters.

The meeting would consider how to take the sub-region’s involvement in the regional PetroCaribe arrangement with Venezuela one step further.

During his New Year’s address as Chairman of the OECS, Dr. Gonsalves had earlier underscored the critical importance, in the present hostile international trade environment, of small and vulnerable countries like the OECS nations “to stick together and undertake even more initiatives aimed at strengthening the integration process.

St. Lucia’s Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony will also travel to Jamaica for the signing ceremony and officials say he might also make an input in the energy conference.
