The Department of Maritime Affairs here in the Federation is continuing its program of training for personnel in the Maritime Industry.

Six participants drawn from the Coast Guard and the two Port Authorities, are participating in an International Maritime Organization Train the Trainers Course which began on Monday.

Director of Maritime Affairs here in St. Kitts and Nevis, Mr. McClean Hobson said,"the objective of the exercise is in preparation to establish our own Maritime Institute in St. Kitts and Nevis. I don=t think we would be as successful as we want to be without maritime instructors/maritime tutours. We need people to develop and enhance the human resource in the marine sector and we believe this is the best way to start by training our tutours."

The weeklong program is being facilitated by a leading US-based Institute, Star Centre.

Maritime Affairs Director said "On completion these tutors would be Alamo certified/ qualified in that they would be able to assess any sort of competency with respect to the STCW Convention which deals with trading for seafarers worldwide."
