Minister with responsibility for CARICOM Single Market and Economy Affairs, Dr. The Honourable Timothy Harris has been doing his best to reassure the people of Nevis that the CSME can work.

While speaking on VON’s Let’s Talk Programme on Tuesday evening he stated:

“For too long we have said we can’t but in Nevis we have Four Seasons; on of the best hotels in the world; through the sweat of ordinary people of Nevis and to a lesser extent St. Kitts. We have in the federation a national bank which is the most successful bank in the OECS and yet we say we can. The power lies in us but we have to recognize that and do the best we can with the resources that we have...the CSME provides the opportunity for people of the Caribbean to do the best that we can with the resources that are available to us. We can and we can make a difference.”

For the most part the program which is hosted by VON Radio General Manager Evered “Webbo” Herbert heard concerns that highlighted the inadequacies of the information and education programmes.

Assistant Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, Mr. Samuel Berridge who was also featured on the Let’s Talk program addressed this matter.

He said; “clearly from the discussion tonight there is need for information and I think we need to see the CSME as a big monster but each CARICOM Member state is a subset of the CSME and there are opportunities to be derived. There are challenges yes, and I guess we can come back some other time and discuss it more in depth details “

Mr. Berridge went on to say, “we need to see the CSME as something which we can actually access,- not just to trade in goods but to trade in services as well.”
