191 years since the ending of Slavery in the British Empire
Friday, August 1st, 2025, marked the widely celebrated Emancipation Day. 191 years ago in the year 1834 slavery in the British Empire came to an end. Caribbean leaders across the region addressed their citizens and residents on the significance of such an occasion.
Joining the recognition on the abolition of slavery is Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, the Hon. Dr. Terrance Drew. He stated:
“Let us take a moment to reflect on the courage and resilience of our ancestors who fought tirelessly to bring an end to the brutal and inhumane institution of slavery. Their struggle laid the foundation for the freedoms we enjoy today.”
The prime minister also commented on the MV Christina Disaster and expressed: “We pause to honour their memory and acknowledge the deep pain still felt by many in our communities.”
Dr. Drew concluded saying: “May we never forget their lives or the lessons of our past.”
