The Premier’s Ministry is inviting the public to attend a service to commemorate the 56^th anniversary of the M.V. Christena Disaster on Saturday, August 1^st, 2026.

The event will be held on the grounds of the Museum of Nevis History and Hamilton House on Samuel Hunkins Drive in Charlestown from 9:00 a.m.  

The service is held on August 1^st each year in remembrance of those who lost their lives during the sinking of the M.V. Christena.

On Saturday, August 1^st, 1970, the ferry sank with 233 passengers and crew, when the overloaded vessel was making its journey from Basseterre to Charlestown. Only 91 people were rescued with most of the bodies being trapped on the boat when it sank.

The tragedy marked a pivotal moment in the federation’s history, particularly on the island of Nevis, as most of the passengers were Nevisians. A monument was erected on Samuel Hunkins Drive in memory of all those who lost their lives.
