The 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season officially begins (today) Wednesday, June 1st.
The season runs from June 1st to November 30th each year.
AccuWeather’s meteorologists forecast another above-normal season in terms of tropical activity in the Atlantic, as well as a higher-than-normal chance that a major hurricane could make landfall in the mainland United States, Puerto Rico and the U.S Virgin Islands.
Additionally, 16-20 named storms, six to eight hurricanes and of those hurricanes, about three to five are forecast to reach major hurricane status, “Category 3 or higher with winds exceeding 111 mph.”
The following list of names will be used for this year’s named storms: Alex, Bonnie, Colin, Danielle, Earl, Fiona, Gaston, Hermine, Ian, Julia, Karl, Lisa, Martin, Nicole, Owen, Paula, Richard, Shary, Tobias, Virginie and Walter.
The first organized tropical system of the season could form as soon as Thursday, AccuWeather forecasters said.
Meteorologists said there was now a “high” chance of a depression or tropical storm forming in the warm waters of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula to the Florida Peninsula.
