Can the island of Nevis expect a by-election following Joseph Parry’s retirement from active politics?
Mr. Joseph Parry, was the lone Member of the Opposition following Nevis’ local elections in Dec. 2017, Nevis’ Premier from 2006 to 2013 and was the former leader of the Nevis Reformation Party (NRP).
The VONNEWSLINE spoke with President of the Nevis Island Assembly, the Hon. Farrell Smithen, who had this to say.
Nevis’ Premier, the Hon. Mark Brantley, also gave this comment following Mr. Parry’s retirement.
We also spoke to Mr. Brantley, with regards to SKN’s constitution, Chapter 4, the Legislature, section 48 which speaks directly about the island of Nevis, “Where the seat of a member of the Assembly falls vacant otherwise than by reason of a dissolution of the Legislature, if the vacant seat is that of an elected member, a by-election shall be held; to fill the vacancy within ninety days of the occurrence of the vacancy, unless the Legislature is sooner dissolved.”
