“The first of its kind” – Pre-COP29 Youth Forum Focusing on Climate Action

The Ministry of Sustainable Development, Environment, Climate Action et. al held the first ever Pre-COP29 Youth Forum with a focus on Climate Action, on Wednesday October 23rd 2024. The forum’s aim was to inform and engage the youth in discussions about Climate Action as well as to introduce to the youth in St. Kitts and Nevis to the Sustainable Island State Agenda (S.I.S.A.).

Public and private students from both the secondary and primary school levels engaged in three informative sessions which are: a “Sustainable Wellness Session” which explored how the climate affects the body and mind, a “Climate Science Session” where climate science was explored in the context of youth and sustainable development and lastly, a “Wrap-up Dialogue”. During the dialogue, the youths engaged with several Ministers of the federal cabinet including Prime Minister, the Hon. Dr. Terrence Drew who also addressed the forum.

A student of the Charlestown Secondary asked PM Drew about how can European nations should contribute to the fight of climate change in the Caribbean Region? This is what he said: “What we’re asking the world is to contribute for us to be able to deal with the scourge of climate change. So, we have conferences…we call them COPS- Conference of Parties…where we discuss climate change and issues to help with the financing that is required to deal with climate change.”
