SKELEC locates fault at its Power Plant following island wide outage in St. Kitts

Minister of Public Infrastructure, Energy and Utilities in St. Kitts, Hon. Konris G. M. Maynard, issued a notice on Facebook Tuesday evening stating, “SKELEC has advised that out of an abundance of caution, they have done a controlled shut down of their entire power plant to investigate a burning scent observed by some workers coming from the main Feeder Room which experienced a fire back in 2020.

As per standard procedure, Fire and Rescue Services are on site along with SKELEC staff to try to identify any potential fault.”

During that time, the minister was recorded live via Facebook at the power plant throughout the investigation, where he explained the precautionary steps SKELEC took to ensure the safety of the staff along with the facility:

However, power was carefully restored to each feeder powering different parts of St. Kitts one by one until full restoration, ensuring no faults were found during this process.

The process took 4-5 hours and later that night SKELEC issued another notice on Facebook that said, “SKELEC is pleased to advise that power has been restored to all feeders. After a thorough investigation, our teams were able to locate the cause of the fault using new technologies recently procured as part of our safety and preventative program”.

SKELEC apologized for the inconvenience caused by the outage and thanked the public for their patience during the time of the outage.

Persons who remain without power are asked to call 869-661-2013.
