Nevis’ Dept. of Education announces temporary closures of St. John’s Pre-school and Grade 1 at CPS

Temporary closures have been announced by Nevis’ Department of Education and it is a precautionary measure in response to confirmed cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD).

“Acting on the advice of health officials, the Department wishes to inform the public of the temporary closure for a period of ten (10) days of the following institutions/classes due to health concerns: St. John’s Preschool, Grade 1 (Hopeful and Helpful) at the Charlestown Primary School”, an official notice from the Department said.

A thorough sanitization of the affected areas will be conducted to ensure a safe and healthy environment for students and staff upon their return, during this period.

The closures come about two days following the temporary closure of the Gingerland Preschool and Grades 1 and 2 of the Violet O. Jeffers-Nicholls Primary School, “due to health concerns” connected to the HFMD. Also, the Inez France and Combermere Pre-schools were closed temporarily for the period Friday Jan. 24th to Monday Jan. 27th, “out of an abundance of caution”, in the wake of “increasing numbers of HFMD.” It was slated for reopening on Tuesday Jan. 28th.

SKN is currently experiencing an outbreak in the disease. Hand-foot-and-mouth disease is a mild, contagious viral infection common in young children. To help prevent the spread of HFMD persons should wash hands often, disinfect common areas, among other preventive measures.
