Flash Flood Advisory in effect for St. Kitts & Nevis

A Flash Flood Advisory is in effect for St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Kitts MET Office and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) say.

A Flash Flood Advisory means that streams, creeks and drains may be elevated or even overflowing into streets, low-lying and flood-prone areas; however, property damage should be minimal.

Minor flooding in low-lying and flood-prone areas is expected and already being experienced in some places.

Inconveniences can be expected but the flooding is not likely to be immediately life threatening. However, just one foot of flowing water is enough to sweep vehicles off the road and a person off their feet. Officials are urging the general public to be cautious when encountering flooded roads and, “if in doubt, make the smart choice – turn around and find an alternative and safe route”, a notice from the NEMA and the Met Office states.

But what is causing the showers? A persistent trough over the Leeward Islands is influencing the weather over the area causing periodic heavy showers and thunderstorms.
