Saint Kitts and Nevis and Cuba celebrate 30 years in Diplomatic Friendship
Saturday May 10th, 2025 marked thirty years since a diplomatic relationship formed between the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis, and the Republic of Cuba in the year 1995.
The Chancellorship of Cuba, that is its foreign ministry, expressed their gratitude on behalf of its people and government:
“Three decades of fruitful collaboration in areas such as health, education, culture and sustainable development reflect mutual commitment to progress and solidarity among our peoples. We reaffirm the will to continue strengthening these historical bonds, based on respect and cooperation.”
A commemorative event was held this past weekend at the Havana House, Port Zante, St. Kitts. It was attended by Governor General of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Her Excellency, Dame Marcella A. Liburd GCMG, JP, Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr. Denzil Douglas, and other government ministers and officials.
Cuba’s Ambassador, His Excellency, David Rivero, expressed gratitude for the federation’s “unwavering solidarity and support against the blockade, and other fighting fronts, such as the recent attack on our international medical collaboration.”
Foreign Minister Douglas emphasized with pride that it was under his government, during his tenure as Prime Minister that the generous offer came from the Cuban President, Fidel Castro, of scholarships for students of St. Kitts and Nevis.
He mentioned “since then, scores of young Kittitians and Nevisians have benefited from these scholarships to study in Cuba” in various disciplines.
