During the recent NVQ-SKN graduation ceremony on Thursday, September 3rd, which celebrated 38 trainees receiving their NVQ Level 1 certifications, Minister of Education, Hon. Dr. Geoffery Hanley announced a major restructuring of technical and vocational education in St. Kitts and Nevis.
Dr. Hanley revealed that in the coming weeks, the Ministry of Education will merge three TVET institutions – AVEC, NSTP and Project Strong – into a single institution. The new institution will be named the Christopher Wilkin Institute of Technology, honoring two pioneers of technical education in the country.
The minister said the institute will focus on inclusivity, adaptability and excellence and highlighted investments in new and emerging technologies, including a recently acquired welding simulator, with plans for additional simulators, virtual reality and augmented reality systems.
Dr. Hanley added that initiatives like NVQ-SKN reflect the nation’s commitment to human capital development, emphasizing that the strength of St. Kitts and Nevis lies in the skills, talents and determination of its people.
The merger is expected to strengthen vocational training, expand student opportunities and ensure the sustainability of skills development nationwide, marking a transformative step for the country’s TVET system.
