Earthquake rattles SKN and Parts of the Region

Residents in both St. Kitts & Nevis were among those who felt a strong earthquake early Monday morning. The Trinidad-based Seismic Research Centre (SRC) at the University of the West Indies’ St. Augustine campus confirmed the quake had a magnitude of 5.3 and struck at 5:16 a.m. at a depth of 24 kilometers.

The tremor was also felt in Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat and Guadeloupe. While there were reports of panic in some islands, authorities say there have been no reports of injuries or damage in St. Kitts and Nevis or across the region.

This latest quake comes less than 48 hours after a smaller magnitude 4.1 event rattled Dominica, Martinique and Guadeloupe. Seismologists are closely monitoring the region and warn that aftershocks remain possible.
