NHCS (Nevis Historical and Conservation Society) has expressed “grave concern” over the proposed Destiny Special Sustainability Zone (SSZ).
In a press release, it warns “that such a large-scale development is unnecessary, potentially dangerous, and risks causing long-term harm to Nevis’ Cultural Heritage and Environmental Integrity.”
The Society stressed that “progress on this project should not proceed without adequate research, independent environmental and social impact assessments, and honest, meaningful public consultation.”
NHCS said “Nevis’ fragile ecosystems, limited freshwater aquifers, and vulnerable coastal areas are already under increasing pressure from the growing effects of climate change. Equally at stake are Nevis’ historic and archaeological sites, which are central to the island’s identity and cultural heritage.”
The Society called on the Nevis Island Administration “to cease all actions related to the proposed SSZ until comprehensive studies are conducted, the people of Nevis are adequately informed and consulted, and this proposal is shown to conform to international standards for sustainable development.”
