The Department of Environment in St. Kitts met with representatives of the Red Cross on Monday January 12th to discuss joint action on environmental issues impacting public health and safety, with a focus on the dangers posed by the Manchineel tree otherwise called the “Tree of Death”.
During the meeting, the Red Cross raised concerns about increasing cases of exposure to the highly toxic tree, which is commonly found in coastal areas. Residents and visitors have reportedly suffered skin irritation and other health complications after unknowingly using the trees for shade or coming into contact with runoff during rainfall.
Officials identified limited public education, insufficient warning signage, and the location of Manchineel trees in popular beach areas as key contributors to the problem. It was emphasized that many individuals remain unaware that rainwater dripping from the tree can cause skin irritation.
To mitigate risks, the Department of Environment in St. Kitts is considering several measures, including removing Manchineel trees from heavily frequented public spaces, installing clearer warning signs, launching public awareness campaigns, and replanting safer, and non-toxic tree species.
