Federal Government Nears Launch of Digital ID and Civil Registry Systems

On Tuesday June 16th, 2026, the Federal Ministry of Public Infrastructure, Energy & Utilities; Domestic Transport; Information, Communication & Technology; and Post held a Progress Report Media Briefing. Mr. Nigel Carty, Advisor and Chief Digital Transformation Officer in the Digital Transformation Unit, highlighted advances in the Electronic Civil Registry System (ECRS) and the Electronic Identification (eID) programme:

 

 

Carty said thousands of historical civil registry records, including birth, marriage and death records dating back to the 1850s, have been digitized and verified as part of an effort to preserve national records and improve service delivery. In regards to the E-ID Carty stated:

 

 

The initiative is expected to make it easier for citizens and residents to access government services online, including applying for passports, obtaining birth certificates and other official documents, while providing a more secure and reliable way to verify identity. It forms part of the Federal government’s push to improve efficiency and modernization.
