As the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season continues, Nevis is turning its attention to preparedness with a week-long Hurricane Awareness Drive from August 16^th to the 22^nd, under the theme: “Preparedness Starts with YOU!”

Led by the Community Climate and Disaster Communications Ambassadors, in collaboration with the Nevis Disaster Management Department and other partners, the campaign will bring hurricane-safety messages directly into communities.

The week begins with Sunday-worship, followed by a public preparedness event at the Memorial Square featuring CPR and first-aid demonstrations, emergency-kit displays and public interviews on Monday.

Businesses will receive guidance on employee safety and continuity planning, while Wednesday’s Community Resilience Symposium in Hickman’s will focus on local hazards, emergency response and community resilience.

Thursday shifts the spotlight to youth and digital engagement, including a hurricane video challenge and live television and radio programmes. The week culminates on Friday with an island-wide Hurricane Awareness Caravan, followed by Saturday’s outreach to Seventh-day Adventist churches.

Organizers are urging every resident, business and community group to take at least one practical preparedness step. The message is simple: when a hurricane threatens, preparation cannot wait, it “starts with you”.
