Following Prime Minister the Hon. Dr. Timothy Harris’ announcement of a ten percent increase on the salaries and wages of civil servants, pensioners and workers of the Skills Training Empowerment Program (STEP), a call has been made to increase the minimum wage in the Federation.
The increase, as stated by the PM is retroactive to January 2022, which means all beneficiaries will receive a one-time payment of the accumulated fees for the period January to April during the Government’s May pay cycle, on the 25th.
Over 9000 persons are expected to benefit from the increase. This comes at a time when external forces such as supply chain disruptions and the war in Ukraine are driving up the cost of living.
Though this is welcomed news for all, Community Advisor/Activist, Mr. Samuel Williams, explains why the minimum wage should increase.
Mr. Samuel Williams.
SKN’s minimum wage stands at $9 per hour or $360 per week for 40 hours of work.
