Action-packed weekend with SUGARMAS 53 activities

The Carib Brewery Senior Calypso Monarch Finals took place on December 27th at St. Kitts Carnival village. Eight Calypsonians competed in 2 rounds for the Crown. They were Big Lice, Drewzy, Lady Carens, Queen Kibi, Issa Kamal, Lady Diva, Queen Signing Jackie and Reigning Monarch, Queen Independent.

In First Position and being crowned Calypso Monarch was first-timer Drewzy with 830 points, claiming a $20,000 cash prize. Following him, in 2nd place was Big Lice with 808 points, winning $15000 and Queen Independent in 3rd with 783 points, claiming $12000.

The criteria for judging were 30 points for music, 30 for performance, 30 for lyrics, and 10 points for originality. Trophies were presented by the Minister with responsibility for Carnival (Culture), Samal Duggins.

 

Meanwhile – The Cable and FFCU Panorama Competition, was held on Sunday, December 29th as part of SUGARMAS 53.

Six bands competed in this competition, 4 from Nevis, those being Oualie Rhythms Steel Orchestra, Poinciana Rhythms Steel Orchestra, Nevis Community Development Steel Orchestra, Gifted Youths Steel Orchestra, and 2 from St. Kitts, EBJ Harmonics Steel Orchestra, and Sugar City Steel Orchestra.

By the end of the competition, claiming the 1st place trophy for the 5th year in a row was EBJ Harmonics steel Orchestra with 418 points, in 2nd was Nevis Community Development Steel Orchestra with 374 points and 3rd place went to the Sugar City Steel Orchestra with 372 pts.
