Brent Edwards charged in hit and run incident on Nevis

Police arrested and charged Brent Edwards for the offence to Failing to Immediately stop at the scene of an accident, which is in connection with the July 15th hit and run incident, on Nevis.

 

 

 

The incident occurred in the area of New River, around 7AM. 80-year-old Florence Ella Merchant of Zion, was found seriously injured on the side of the road by a passerby, as she was struck by a vehicle while walking on the side of the road.

 

 

 

Ms. Merchant was transported to the Alexandra Hospital where upon examination, she was found to have sustained a broken arm, a broken hand, and numerous bruises. About two days after, on Monday July 17th, she succumbed to her injuries. Resident Pathologist, Dr Naudica Phillip, concluded that death was due to decompensated cardiomyopathy from a road accident.

 

 

 

Edwards, a police officer, was responsible for the incident. A police spokesperson told the VONNEWSLINE that Edwards was also issued with a notice of intended prosecution for the offence of Dangerous Driving. He was charged at the Cotton Ground Police Station on July 17th, 2023, and has since been remanded to prison while the investigation is in progress.

 

 

 

Police have also asked “for patience, restraint, and understanding” as they investigate the incident.
