Christopher Wilkin Institute of Technology – the nation’s newest development on advancing Technical Training

The Christopher Wilkin Institute of Technology (CWIT) is a merger of three technical institutions into a modern hub for technical education.

 

CEO of the St.Kitts – Nevis TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) Council Secretariat, Dr. Kertney Thompson, explained that CWIT now houses simulators for welding, air conditioning, and electrical training, helping students practice safely and cost-effectively before transitioning to real-world applications.

 

The institute’s revamped infrastructure also includes smart classrooms, upgraded Wi-Fi, and computer labs equipped with industry-standard software, ensuring students gain both hands-on and digital competencies. The programs offered align with national goals to expand into renewable energy, construction, technology and other skilled sectors.

 

Recently the first National Vocational Qualification (NVQ-SKN) certifications were presented and Dr. Thompson spoke about the regional landscape of NVQ programs as well as outlined the goal for such programs in the nation:

 

 

Dr. Kertney Thompson. COHSOD, refers to the CARICOM Council for Human and Social Development. Also the significance of CVQs or Caribbean Vocational Qualification is that it allows for skilled workers to show different levels of competence in technical work allowing for easy mobility across the region.
