Cuban Based Medical Students Gain Experience at JNF Hospital

Four students from St. Kitts and Nevis studying medicine at the University of Havana in Cuba are currently gaining hands on experience at the JNF General Hospital, as part of the annual Summer Observership Employment Programme.

According to Director of Health Institutions, Dr. Jenson Morton, the group includes two fifth year students, Ms. Yaruska Irish and Mr. Rashumba Gilbert and two third year students, Ms. Kaedida Fough and Ms. Dolicia Barry.

Guided by hospital internist Dr. Babu Chinnaswamy, they will rotate through the Medicine, Surgery, Maternity and Pediatrics Departments in the mornings and work in the Emergency Room during the afternoons.

Ms. Irish and Mr. Gilbert, who have worked at the hospital before, began on July 14th. Ms. Fough and Ms. Barry, working there for the first time, began on July 28th after orientation.

The observership programme, running for the past 13 years, allows local medical students in Cuba to gain experience during their summer break, while receiving compensation through the Skills Training Empowerment Programme.
