This year’s Wahoo Tournament was a fantastic display of skill, camaraderie, and appreciation for our fisheries sector where Fisherfolk showcased their talents and commitment to food security by participating.
Held in recognition of World Fisheries Day that is celebrated globally on November 21st, the tournament not only showcased incredible fishing talent but also highlighted the importance of sustainable fishing practices preserving our marine ecosystems.
Cash prizes were given to the top 3 fishers with the heaviest catches.
1st place was given to Edwin Blair, who won $2000XCD for a catch weighing 41.5lbs and Micheal Maynard won the 2nd place prize of $1500XCD and 3rd place prize of $1000XCD for catches weighing 37lbs and 34lbs respectively.
Charles Gaskell was awarded $2000XCD for the biggest poundage of Ocean Pelagic with a 225lbs catch. A special prize of $1,000 XCD was also awarded to Rashawn Marshall for bringing in a shark weighing 648 lbs.
Hon. Samal Duggins joined the excitement, engaging with patrons and showing his support for this much-anticipated event.
Minister Duggins said this on Facebook: “As the Minister responsible for the fisheries sector, I was beyond impressed by the incredible display of talent from our fisherfolk. The highlight of the day? An astonishing 648.5lb Shark brought in right here in Old Road! If this doesn’t showcase the unmatched expertise of our local fishermen, I don’t know what does.”
