As the Christmas and Carnival Season heats up, the Department of Probation and Child Protection Services in St. Kitts has released safety and well-being guidelines for children, youths and vulnerable individuals.
Parents and guardians are urged to: be aware of their children’s whereabouts and their companions, practice proper supervision in public and unsafe spaces, educate their child on adequate safety measures, and information, for example, the full name and contact of a parent or guardian, as well as, saved in their cellphone contacts. Responsibility is admonished in the consumption of alcohol and other substances that impair judgement.
Individuals with custody and access arrangements are encouraged to exercise patience and grace, considering factors such as traffic that may affect pick-ups and drop-offs.
The general community is asked to look out for signs of abuse and exploitation, and report it to the department, or nearest police station, and offer support to families or individuals in need.
For carnival activities, the public is urged to ensure the safety and the appropriate attire of children, that events are age appropriate, that they abstain from alcohol, drug use and sexual activity and are not exposed to inappropriate behaviours, environments and materials.
If you, or someone you know is in need of assistance contact the department’s hotline at 662-6833.
