With the annual rollout of the Nevis Disaster Management Department (NDMD) Multi-hazard Awareness Campaign, the most recent Youth on the Go Programme featured primary school ambassadors of the Charlestown Primary School educating the public about earthquakes and the basics of surviving of these seismic events.

Daniqua Delashley, spoke about how families can prepare and stay safe:

During drills persons should practice the safest response which is to “Drop, Cover, and Hold On”. Drop to the ground, cover your head and neck under sturdy furniture or against an inside wall, and hold on until the shaking stops. This protects you from falling objects and helps prevent serious injury. Another student, Lajari Winter also shared what persons can do if they find themselves trapped under debris after an earthquake:

In the Caribbean, a region prone to frequent earthquake, it is important persons educate themselves on what to do in emergencies and remain safe. Additionally, as part of the Multi-hazard Campaign, students will have the chance to participate in quizzes with the goal of reinforcing the safety lessons from the program, test knowledge and earn rewards while staying engaged in disaster preparedness.
