Earthquake Recorded Off St. Kitts And Nevis

A magnitude 4-point-1 earthquake was recorded off St. Kitts and Nevis on Friday, March 27th at 5:26 p.m. local time.

 

According to the University of the West Indies Seismic Research Centre (UWI-SRC), the quake occurred at a depth of 142 kilometers.

 

The epicenter was located approximately 107 kilometers northwest of Basseterre, St. Kitts.

 

The tremor was also felt within the wider region, with locations including Brades, Montserrat and St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda within a 200-kilometre radius of the epicenter.

 

This latest event adds to a series of recent seismic activity near the Federation.

 

Between March 13th and March 26th, four earthquakes were recorded in the vicinity of St. Kitts, occurring on the 13th, 19th, 20th and 26th.

 

The Eastern Caribbean remains a seismically active zone, as it lies along the boundary between the Caribbean and Atlantic tectonic plates, resulting in hundreds of earthquakes being recorded across the region each year.
