Environmental Officers urges the public to stop Illegal Dumping and Sand Mining
This week’s episode of the InFocus Programme featured two environmental officers of St. Kitts’ Department of Environment urging individuals to refrain from illegal dumping and sand mining.
Senior Environmental Officer, Dr. Elrick Francis, discussed the negative effects of persons dumping old appliances, furniture, or garbage:
Individuals are encouraged to transport their waste such as appliances to the public landfills to be disposed of at a small fee or face penalties:
Sand mining is the unauthorized removal of sand from beaches which can have a negative impact on ecosystems such as loss of habitats and local fauna as well as increased vulnerability of coastlines during adverse weather. Environment Officer 2, Mr. Sherverne Gardiner, encourages persons to get authorization:
Furthermore, those caught illegally sand mining can face a fine of $10 000 and or twelve months of imprisonment.
