With schools closed for the Summer Break, the Federal Ministry of Social Development & Gender Affairs is encouraging parents, guardians, and caregivers to take steps to protect children and teenagers during their extended time away from school.

The Ministry notes that while holidays provide opportunities for rest and recreation, increased unsupervised time may expose children to potential risks. Families are encouraged to establish safety rules, discuss household dangers, ensure children know emergency contacts, and promote responsible decision-making.

Parents are also advised to monitor online activity, set screen-time limits, and educate children about digital safety. Maintaining good hygiene, healthy eating habits, hydration, and protection from the sun and insects are important for children’s wellbeing.

For families travelling, the Ministry recommends ensuring vehicle safety, updated travel documents, and close supervision in unfamiliar places. Safe play environments, appropriate caregiving arrangements, and discussions about personal boundaries can further reduce risks.

The Ministry also stresses emergency preparedness, including basic first aid awareness, and urges older teens to avoid unsafe behaviours such as substance use, dangerous driving, and risky interactions. The guidance aims to help families enjoy a safe and positive holiday period.
