Federal Minister Clarke urges Business and Consumer Compliance amidst Single Use Plastics Ban
The May 15th, 2025 sitting of the National Assembly featured Federal Minister of Environment, the Hon. Dr. Joyelle Clarke discussing the ongoing phased ban on Single Use Plastics:
A licensing system was highlighted:
Dr. Joyelle Clarke. Other actions such as verification, spot checks and compliance monitoring are being taken to ensure that only certified alternatives for plastics are entering the federation’s ports and markets.
Furthermore, phase 2 of the ban is in progress, as of April 30th, 2025, a cap was placed on the importation of Styrofoam Food Containers, Plastic Egg Crates and Plastic Straws.
These items can no longer be sold or distributed after July 31st, 2025.
Phase 1 ended on March 31st 2025, where the importation, sale and distribution of t-shirt shopping bags were barred.
