Federal Ministry of Education issues hair guidelines, to take effect September 2023

The Federal Ministry of Education has issued hair guidelines, which will take effect September 2023. It comes as the new academic year (or school year), is slated to officially begin on September 4th.

A release from the Ministry in St. Kitts provided the rationale for the guidelines, which says “the hair guidelines are established to prevent any potential discrimination related to hair and hairstyles. The guidelines are aimed to help school leaders foster an inclusive educational environment while ensuring that students’ access to education is not limited.”

The goal of the new hair guidelines for students is to create an inclusive and respectful environment that promotes diversity and self-expression in line with school standards.

They emphasize comfort, cleanliness and neatness. They safeguard against discrimination while maintaining safety and a professional appearance. They aim to reduce feelings of insecurity and support students’ mental health and well-being.

The rules include: students maintaining neat and clean hair at all times, traditional haircuts, natural locs and afros. Cornrows are permitted for male and female students. All of the guidelines can be viewed via our Facebook page, at VON Radio.
