A fire occurred at the Conaree Landfill in St. Kitts on Wednesday May 30th.

VONNEWSLINE spoke with Fire Sub-Station Officer at the Basseterre Fire Service, Pablo Gumbs, who said because debris or materials are covered with dirt at the landfill, “this was as a result of a chemical chain reaction, with heat, fuel and Oxygen,” which will periodically occur.

Fortunately, there was no loss of life, injuries, nor damage to property. He added this:

In a notice from the Solid Waste Management Corporation, the landfill was closed “effective immediately due to health risks posed by the fire on the premises.” It indicated however, that the facility was reopened, on Thursday May 30th.
