Following Nevis’ 1st recorded House fire for 2020 in which a wooden structure in Montpelier Estate, here on the island was destroyed, the Nevis Division of the St. Kitts-Nevis Fire & Rescue Services, disclosed to the VONNEWSLINE an issue, that has come to the fore.
The house fire occurred during the afternoon hours of Wednesday Jan. 15th. On Thursday Jan. 16th, we spoke with Divisional Fire Officer here on Nevis, Mr. Garfield Hodge, who stated that “approximately 8000 gallons of water” was used to complete the extinguishment of the fire.
However, Mr. Hodge stated that the incident exposed one of the vulnerabilities, in the department’s firefighting capacity.
A fire hydrant is a connection point by which firefighters can tap into a water supply, to use to stop fires. Taking into consideration the issue brought before the VONNEWSLINE, we also asked Mr. Hodge if more manpower and fire trucks are needed.
