First Batch of Chicks distributed from Bayford’s Hatchery in St. Kitts
First Batch of Chicks distributed from Bayford’s Hatchery in St. Kitts
In a progressive move towards food security, and enhancing the poultry sector, the first batch of chicks produced from the Bayford’s Hatchery in St. Kitts, were distributed on Tuesday May 6th 2025.
The chicks were distributed to Crystal Adams, owner of the Eggcellent Farm and Lindbergh Belle, Manager of the St. Kitts Central School Farm.
The hatchery is a part of the state-of-the-art Layer Chicken Breeder Farm and Hatchery facility, commissioned in October 2024, at the Bayford’s Livestock Centre of Excellence.
It forms part of a joint project between the Taiwan International Cooperation and Development Fund (Taiwan ICDF) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Marine Resources in St. Kitts.
That project is the Layer Chicken Industry Sustainable Development Project which aims to provide local farmers with over 20 000-day old chicks a year for meat and egg production.
It forms a part of the federal government’s agenda to cut the federation’s food import bill by 25% and reduce dependence on external sources to meet local food demands.
