In an update about the 19 individuals found dead on a boat drifting off Nevis, the Forensic Pathologist tasked with examining the migrants’ remains arrived in the Federation on Tuesday and “forensic examinations will commence this week”, a police spokesperson told the VONNEWSLINE.
On Wednesday January 29th, authorities received a report of a vessel drifting southwest of Nevis between the hours of 11AM and 12 noon.
The St. Kitts-Nevis Defence Force (SKNDF) Coast Guard Base responded and towed the vessel to the Coast Guard base in St. Kitts, where it was dry-docked to facilitate further investigations. According to a Police Communique, Police officers observed a total of nineteen (19) deceased persons onboard and based on assessments, the vessel had been at sea for a lengthy period, considering their advanced stages of decomposition.
All occupants were determined to have been deceased before the vessel entered St. Kitts and Nevis territorial waters. Identification documents found aboard suggest that some deceased individuals originated from Mali, West Africa.
