International Credit Union Week 2025 is being celebrated across the federation under the global banner of: “Cooperation for a Prosperous World.”
The Nevis Cooperative Credit Union (NCCU) had a special donation and awards ceremony on Monday, October 13th, 2025. During the ceremony, the first ever recipients of the newly renamed NCCU scholarship programme were recognized.
The scholarship which is in its 39th year has been renamed in honour of former General Manager, Mr. George Sydney Newton, for his dedicated service to the institution for over 3 decades.
The George Sydney Newton Scholarship Award were presented to Michyla Bailey and Duchess Hutton who attend the Charlestown Secondary School as well as Malia Blake and Jaavan Jones, students at the Gingerland Secondary School.
Mr. Newtown who presented the awards himself, had these words to share:
Mr. George Sydney Newtown.
Meantime – This week’s edition of the Let’s Talk Programme, featured guests from the credit union group.
The panel discussed the unique advantages of credit unions over commercial banks, including higher dividends on permanent shares, fewer fees, and strong community-based values. They emphasized the importance of financial literacy, regulatory compliance, and efforts to make banking more accessible, especially in contrast to frustrating experiences with traditional banks.
This is the voice of General Manager of the St. Kitts Nevis National Cooperative League Limited, Mr. Ivor Phillip who spoke about the ‘secret sauce’ of credit unions:
