High surf and small craft advisories in effect for SKN

“High Surf and Small Craft Advisories are in effect for St. Kitts and Nevis until (today) Wednesday April 2nd”, NEMA (National Emergency Management Agency) says.

The agency mentioned in an advisory on social media that “dangerous waves between 6 and 8 feet that are breaking on the northern facing coastlines are causing hazardous sea conditions.”

Surfs (breaking swells) are over 1.8 metres (over 6 feet). These conditions are conducive to dangerous rip currents. Windy conditions will continue to persist across the region. The winds will maintain choppy and hazardous sea conditions.

Beach goers and small craft operators should exercise caution in these waters. Persons are asked to bathe only where lifeguards are present or on the sheltered, less affected beaches, mainly to the south.

Extreme caution is also required by those using the affected non-beach or rocky coastlines.
