In East Harlem, New York, on Saturday, family and friends gathered to celebrate the unveiling of Cicely Tyson Way on 101st Street and Third Avenue.
Cicely Tyson was a Hollywood actress. She now has a street named after her and was born in Harlem, New York in 1924 to Fredericka (Huggins) Tyson and William Augustine Tyson, immigrants from Gingerland, Nevis.
She passed away on Thursday, January 28th, 2021.
Her career spanned over seven decades in movies, television and theater. She also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, two Emmys, a Tony Award and an honorary Academy Award.
According to ny1.com, as 101st Street between Lexington and Third Avenue was blocked off to traffic, guests made performances in song, word and dance to give a reflection of Tyson’s impact on the community. Many of the local businesses also provided discounts and specials in her honor.
