In its efforts to gain World Heritage Site status, the Nevis World Heritage Committee invited two World Heritage Site Consultants, Mr. Barry Gamble and Paul Simmonds, from February 5th to 8th 2020 to garner feedback on the condition of Nevis’ historical sites as the island petitions for UNESCO World Heritage Site status.
To determine a site’s worthiness of the status, its Authenticity and Integrity are judged. The integrity of a site is assessed, comprising of the natural and cultural properties of the site, however the cultural properties are assessed from 2005 and onwards; while the Authenticity does not weight the cultural properties but assesses a site’s Outstanding Universal Value (OVU), that is if the sites features express the properties significance and whether or not the site suffers from adverse developments or neglect.
Mr. Gamble made this comment on July 12th on the integrity of one of Nevis’ historical sites, Fort Charles, as well as the next steps in its preservation for World Heritage Site status:
